On Thursday, December 10, the UFC touched down in Las Vegas and kicked off the busiest weekend in company with UFC Fight Night 80 live from the The Chelsea at The Cosmopolitan.
In the night’s main event, fan favorite Paige VanZant squared off against former title contender Rose Namajunas in a strawweight contest.

Namajunas (3-2) looked to pick up her second straight win inside the Octagon after earning an impressive first round submission over TUF 20 teammate Angela Hill at UFC 192. This victory not only marked her first win under the UFC banner but snapped her two fight losing streak. Namajunas entered this bout with all three of her professional wins ending in submission

VanZant (6-1), a Team Alpha Male Product, had compiled a 3-0 record since debuting with the UFC last year. Prior to facing Namajunas, the woman known as ’12 Gauge’ walked away with a third submission victory over Alex Chambers at UFC 191. She entered this bout with career stoppage wins, including two by way of submission.

MAIN CARD SUMMARY

Rose Namajunas vs. Paige VanZant

Michael Chiesa vs. Jim Miller

Chiesa opened the round swinging, and eventually got a takedown on Miller. Miller took an axe kick from Chiesa after kicking him away, and looked for a leg lock, but used it to sweep Chiesa. Miller kept Chiesa down on the ground and finished through the end of the round while on Chiesa’s back.

Chiesa stayed patient, however, and remained calm through round two. Miller hunted for a leg lock but Chiesa punched his way out and stealthily took the back to lock up a rear naked choke to force a tap and score arguably his biggest UFC win to date.

Sage Northcutt vs. Cody Pfister

Pfister delivered on a big takedown against the cage in the opening seconds of the fight, and pulled Northcutt away from the cage to try and mount some offense. Both men worked well on the bottom, with Northcutt trying to control the head, but the referee didn’t like what he saw on the ground, so he stood both up, where Northcutt scored a takedown, tried for an arm triangle, and landed a few heavy shots to close the first round.

Northcutt turned everything up, from his footwork to his striking, and he created an opportunity to gain a dominant position and catch the neck for a guillotine choke. Once he locked the choke up, secured the body lock, and sat back on the hold, Pfister had no choice but to tap.

Thiago “Marreta” Santos vs. Elias Theodorou

Theodorou told the story of round one simply by his efforts in the striking game. Santos looked to establish his power early, but Theodorou stuck a front kick to the body and kept peppering Santos with punches and lighting him up with kicks through the round.

Santos hit the canvas in round two, due predominantly to Theodorou finding takedown opportunities and getting the best of each attempt. Santos got up, but found himself pressed against the fence quickly. Despite Theodorou’s attempts to maintain control against the fence, Santos stayed in the fight, landing shots to slow down Theodorou.

The tide of the fight appeared to be turning by the third and final round, which saw Santos land some of his best shots as Theodorou began to slow down significantly. Santos managed to cut Theodorou open, and from there, he connected shot after shot on the young upstart. Theodorou tried to muster up some offense, but Santos proved too much to handle for three rounds, and he took a unanimous decision win in a real firefight as a result of his efforts.
