A main event heavyweight bout has been booked for Bellator 161 this September as former UFC star Cheick Kongo (24-10-2) puts his two-fight win streak on the line against Tony Johnson (10-2), winner of three straight and two under the Bellator banner. The news began circulating during the Bellator 159 broadcast Friday night from Kansas.

Kongo, who flirted with the top ten of the UFC before signing with Bellator back in 2013, has dispatched former Bellator heavyweight champ Alexander Volkov and Vinicius Queiroz in his most recent trips to the cage. Johnson, meanwhile, holds wins over Volkov and Raphael Butler during his current run in the promotion.

With Bellator’s heavyweight crown still up in the air, this could be a move that puts one man a step towards the vacant heavyweight strap. Johnson also holds wins over notables like Tim Sylvia and Derrick Lewis, while Kongo remains one of the biggest draws in Bellator’s heavyweight division.

Bellator 161 will be held in Austin, TX September 16. No other fights have been announced for the card as of yet.
