Conor McGregor (José Youngs/The MMA Corner)Potential Next Opponents for McGregor The MMA Corner Staff October 11, 2018 Events, News, Promotions, UFC UFC 229 is over in what has to go down as the most action-packed event in the sport’s history. The build-up was huge as the fight between McGregor and Khabib became the most anticipated clash in UFC history. McGregor was returning from a near two-year layoff and was ultimately dominated by the unbeaten Russian. Prior to the fight punters were looking at the review of golden nugget offers on the fight, in which Khabib started as the 4/7 favourite. What materialised were very ugly scenes following the conclusion as Khabib lost all composure. As all of you will have seen he jumped the cage to attack Dillon Danis, and now faces a hefty punishment. What do you think his punishment should be? Leave your comments below. However, what is next for the sport’s biggest star? Here we cover the two most likely next opponents. Khabib Nurmagomedov His most likely next step will be a rematch with Khabib. He is already calling for this as shown in a recent twitter post, where he states he is looking forward to the rematch. The fight would sell so will likely happen again plus there is the continued unrest between two camps. Khabib dominated McGregor for much of the contest so many would say why should he get a rematch? It was a similar story in the first Diaz fight and McGregor returned to get his hand raised the following encounter. Khabib had not lost a round in his career prior to McGregor winning round three in Vegas over the weekend. This is another factor that he still did provide one of the biggest tests for the Russian. Khabib is without a doubt the most dominating champion in the history of the UFC, so as long as he does not get punished to harshly is the likely next step for McGregor. Tony Ferguson Another possible next opponent is Tony ‘El Cucuy’ Ferguson. He was another impressive winner on the UFC 229 card and called McGregor out following his victory. He has now set himself up for a clash with either Khabib or McGregor and is the biggest threat to either of them in the division. Ferguson has now extended his winning run to eleven having not tasted defeat in the cage since back in 2012. He is a very unorthodox fighter with fantastic stand up as well as being an all American wrestler. Many UFC fans now want him to face off against Khabib as he could just be the one to defeat the Russian. If anyone deserves that title shot or money fight, then it is Tony Ferguson.
