WrestleMania is the leading pay-per-view in the sports entertainment brand WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) and the promoters often use MMA stars to feature on the show.

Brock Lesnar and Shayna Baszler are respective stars in each of their divisions in the WWE and both have had successful MMA careers.

New heavyweight world champion Tyson Fury has also appeared in the WWE over the last six months. A return to the brand looks unlikely though, as he is expected to meet Deontay Wilder again in the third installment of their rivalry, where he is 2/7 in the latest boxing odds for that bout.

With all this in mind, here are three MMA athletes who may just fancy an appearance at WrestleMania in 2020.

Cain Velasquez

Cain Velasquez made his debut in a WWE ring at Crown Jewel in Saudi Arabia back in October. The two-time UFC heavyweight champion came up against Brock Lesnar, the man he beat to land the heavyweight title for the first time in 2010.

While Velasquez announced back in October his retirement from MMA, he has recently failed to rule out the possibility of returning to the sport. The American remains signed up to the WWE and, although he is not part of any storylines at the moment, that could change ahead of WrestleMania.

Another shot at Lesnar is unlikely, as the WWE heavyweight champion is scheduled to face Royal Rumble winner Drew McIntyre in the main event on the pay-per-view card.

Conor McGregor

There is arguably no bigger name in MMA than Conor McGregor. He has long been linked with the WWE, as owner Vince McMahon is thought to have made several attempts to sign the Irishman up.

McGregor appeared in the octagon for the first time in over two years at UFC 246. He defeated Donald Cerrone in the opening round of their clash in Las Vegas, Nevada.

WWE has snapped up some of the biggest names in fighting for WrestleMania over the years. The ‘baddest man on the planet’ at the time, Mike Tyson, featured in 1998 while, more recently, Floyd Mayweather took on the Big Show in 2012.

McGregor has already tried his hand at the sport, as he faced Mayweather in 2017 in one of the biggest cross-sport matches in modern history. He may see WWE as the perfect chance to perform in front of a new audience.

Amanda Nunes

Amanda Nunes is ranked as the number one UFC women’s pound-for-pound fighter in the world. She is the first woman to become a two-division champion in the UFC.

One of Nunes’ early wins in her career came against Baszler, who is now one of the leading female stars with the WWE, so a clash with her former rival looks an obvious storyline.

Former MMA fighter Ronda Rousey made history by being involved in WrestleMania’s main event against Becky Lynch in 2019. If Nunes did sign a deal with the entertainment brand, she would surely, like Rousey, be involved in one of the biggest matches on the night.

WrestleMania 36 takes place from the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay on April 5 in, what should be, a sell-out event once again.
