Yoshihiro Akiyama to Drop to Welterweight, Wants to Be GSP’s ‘Apprentice’

After losing three straight fights as a middleweight, Japanese star Yoshihiro Akiyama is finally moving to welterweight.

The judoka fighter is 1-3 in the UFC and 14-4 with two no-contests overall. Akiyama considered retirement after his loss to Vitor Belfort last month, but is now planning on losing 15 pounds and seeking advice from Georges St-Pierre.

Akiyama was forced to close his Cloud Dojo camp due to financial problems. He stated that he would like to make the move to Canada to become St-Pierre’s “apprentice.”

Rogers-Sanchez Targeted for Titan FC 20 on Sept. 23

Brett Rogers is back.

He announced Friday on “Inside MMA” on HDNet that he will take on Eddie Sanchez at Titan Fighting Championship 20.

Also at TFC in Kansas City, Kan., will be former WEC champion Jamie Varner locking horns with Alonzo Martinez, while Anthony Gutierrez takes on Laramie Shaffer.

TUF Veterans Face Off as Marcus Davis Meets Chuck O’Neil at W-1 in Florida

Former UFC welterweight Marcus Davis will return to action in October, when he fights on W-1 in Florida against Chuck O’Neil.

The event takes place on Oct. 15 in Florida as the W-1 will make their debut in the U.S.

Davis vs. O’Neil will be a part of a solid card that features Gabriel Gonzaga taking on Jeff Monson in the main event.

Bellator reaches verbal agreement with Brazilian middleweight prospect Bruno Santos

Bellator Fighting Championships’ on-going focus on picking up top global prospects continues, and Bruno Santos (12-0 MMA, 0-0 BFC) will be yet another Brazilian youngster to sign with the promotion.

No date or opponent has been established for Santos.

The 24-year-old is undefeated as a professional, has outstanding stamina, and solid ground-and-pound skills.

Bellator to sign German light heavyweight Jonas Billstein

It’s apparently a hectic weekend at the Bellator Fighting Championship offices.

The promotion has reached a verbal agreement with 20-year-old German prospect Jonas Billstein (9-1 MMA, 0-0 BFC).

Billstein has fought professionally since 2009, with his first six wins coming in the opening round.

No debut date or opponent has been set thus far for the German.
