Jon Jones to defend UFC light heavyweight title at UFC 140 against Lyoto Machida

Rashad Evans was expected to be the next in line to take on Jon Jones for his light heavyweight title.  Rumors broke out to the public yesterday reporting that the fight would take place at UFC 140, however the rumors proved to be false as Dana White confirmed it to be untrue.  Today, White announced via Twitter that UFC 140 would in fact have “Bones” defend his title, only that the challenger would be former champion Lyoto Machida.

Unable to compete due to an injured thumb suffered during his fight against Tito Ortiz, Evans was humble with the decision made by White.  “Dana White and I spoke earlier today, and I fully understand his decision to put Machida against Jones for the title at UFC 140.  Given the rehabilitation time I require for my dislocated thumb, I would not be 100 percent ready by December 10.  The UFC has to keep making fights that entertain the fans.  I would have done the same thing as Dana in his position.  I’m asking for the fans to support me as I rehabilitate my hand, and I promise I will be back fighting very quickly,” said Evans in a statement released today.

UFC 140 will take place in on Dec. 10 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Heavyweight tournament field expanded at Bellator 53

Last weekend, Bellator 52 provided the first round of Bellator’s heavyweight tournament.  In the main event, Mike Hayes defeated Neil Grove by split decision to advance to the semi-finals, however he may be unable to continue in the tournament.  Hayes has been suspended for 60 days by the Louisiana State Commission and may not be able to fight when the tournament resumes at Bellator 56.

Because of this, Bellator added a heavyweight tournament alternate bout to their fight card at Bellator 53.  Thiago Santos and Josh Burns will fight for the chance of being able to replace Hayes, should he not be able to continue on in the tournament.  Santos was originally slated to fight in the tournament, however he was unable to compete due to encountering visa issues in his homeland of Brazil.  With those problems behind him, he is now eager and ready to fight and try to earn his way back into the tournament.

Bellator 53 takes place this Saturday in Miami, Okla.
