In the Cage – 9.13.12 Brian McKenna September 13, 2012 News Each day, The MMA Corner will provide a recap of results, event announcements, fight matchups, and injuries/cancellations from throughout the world of MMA. Alvarez vs. “Pitbull” to headline Bellator 76 The main event at Bellator 76 will be a lightweight matchup between two of the promotions top fighters. Eddie Alvarez will fight for the last time on his Bellator contract against Patricky “Pitbull” Freire. Alvarez is considered to be a top free agent when his contract with Bellator runs out after this fight, and a victory against the Brazilian would further solidify his value. In his last fight, the former lightweight champion defeated Shinya Aoki, while Freire’s last fight had him losing in the second round to Lloyd Woodard. Both fighters would like to have this victory. Also taking place at the event will be the quarterfinal fights for the season seven featherweight tournament. The main card at Bellator 75 will feature the beginning of a heavyweight tournament. Considering Konrad retired within the last few days, it is unknown whether or not the champion of the tournament will become the next man to wear the belt, or if there will be other plans to determine the next champion. The tournament field will feature former Strikeforce fighter Brett Rogers, and in the first round we will finally get to see Thiago Santos take on Eric Prindle. The two fighters originally squared off at Bellator 59 with the winner advancing to fight then champion Konrad. The fight was ruled a no-contest after Prindle was illegally hit in the groin in the first round and was unable to continue. The two were then set to square off at Bellator 61, however Prindle became ill, and the fight was moved to Bellator 62. At the weigh-in’s, Santos failed to make weight, which resulted in the fight being scrapped and the tournament victory being handed to Prindle.
