Who doesn’t love a good trilogy?

On Thursday afternoon, UFC President Dana White revealed the promotion was looking to book the highly anticipated rubber match between former UFC welterweight champion Johny Hendricks and current champion Robbie Lawler as the main event of an upcoming UFC fight card

In their initial meeting, fans saw Hendricks (16-3) emerge victorious from their thrilling ‘Fight of the Year’ candidate at UFC 171 in March 2014, winning the vacant 170-pound title in the process.

Lawler (25-10) would go onto score back-to-back victories over Jake Ellenberger and Matt Brown, thus earning his rematch with the champion, before getting his revenge in the former of a hard-fought split decision win over Hendricks at UFC 181 in December.

While it was widely believed top ranked Rory MacDonald (16-3), who was last seen extending his win streak to three with a violent third round knockout over Tarec Saffiedine, would be next in the line for a shot at the belt, White revealed a trilogy was the best way to go.

“That’s what’s going to happen,” White told reporters. “We just feel like the trilogy makes sense, to do the third fight between these two (Lawler and Hendricks).”

It should be noted, this matchup has yet to be made official and a date and venue have yet to be announced. However, reports are indicating the event will be held in Montreal some time in April.
