(Dave Mandel/Sherdog)rPU-kDvnHnAFight of the Week: Chad Mendes vs. Ricardo Lamas RJ Gardner April 1, 2015 Events, Spotlight Unlike other professional sports, there is no off-season in MMA. Week in and week out fight cards all over the world are taking place. Some weeks there will be major fight cards filled with big name fighters others not so much, but there are fights taking place every week. Regardless of whether the fighters are household names or not, The MMA Corner will preview the best fight taking place during the week. This week’s ‘Fight of the Week’ is the UFC featherweight bout between Chad Mendes and Ricardo Lamas. On Saturday, April 4, 2015, the UFC heads to the Patriot Center in Fairfax, Va., for UFC Fight Night 63: Mendes vs. Lamas where two top five featherweights will battle it out. Since losing to champion Jose Aldo, Lamas has won back-to-back bouts and is currently ranked fourth in the official UFC rankings. In his last bout, Lamas stopped a surging Dennis Bermudez in the very first round; Bermudez had won seven straight heading into that bout. Mendes on the other hand is coming off of a 2014 ‘Fight of the Year’ loss to Aldo. Mendes gave the champion everything he had, but it just wasn’t enough and Aldo took home the belt via unanimous decision. Mendes currently finds himself in a precarious position because he has proven he can’t beat every other featherweight in the world not named Jose Aldo. His lone two career losses came at the hands of Aldo and he is going to have to do something spectacular to earn a third shot at the champion. Mendes is a huge favorite heading into the bout, but Lamas is not to be taken lightly. The former NCAA Division III All-American has a dangerous skill set and he matches up with Mendes well. Mendes is going to have to being his “A” game if he is going to pick up an impressive win over Lamas.
