On Friday night, Invicta Fighting Championship touched down in Kansas City to bring fight fans Invicta FC 12: Kankaanpaa vs. Souza live from Municipal Auditorium. The entire card was streamed live on UFC Fight Pass.

In the night’s main event, the promotions 125-pound belt was on the line as flyweight champion Katja “Killer Bunny” Kankaanpaa of Finland looked to make her first title defense against undefeated submission specialist Livia Renata “Livinha” Souza of Brazil.

The 33-year old Kankaanpaa (10-1-1) captured gold with a fifth-round submission win over Stephanie Eggink at Invicta FC 8 in September of 2014. The challenger Souza (7-0), who was making Invicta debut, entered this bout with an unblemished record, with all but one of seven wins coming by way of submission, including five first-round finishes.

In the night’s co-main event Roxanne Modafferi will look to repeat her 2008 TKO of Vanessa Porto.

Modafferi (17-11), a veteran of 18th season of The Ultimate Fighter, scored the only knockout victory of her career when she first fought Porto in 2008. Modafferi entered this bout riding a two-fight winning streak. Prior to this string of success, fans saw her suffer a career worst six straight losses. Porto (17-6) had won 10 of 13 bouts since losing to Modafferi, including her last two.

Main Card Summary

Katja Kankaanpaa vs. Livia Renata Souza – For Invicta FC strawweight title

Round 1: Souza opened the round with a leg kick, and followed it up with another. They clinched up and Souza attempted to take Kankaanpaa’s back, but ended up on her back. Souza was looking for something from guard but, Kankaanpaa was doing well at defending. They got back to the feet and exchanged. Souza landed a solid right hand that rocked Kankaanpaa momentarily, but she clinched up and recovered. Kankaanpaa was holding her against the cage when Souza exploded and took her down. Souza took her back and locked in a body triangle as she attempted a rear naked choke. Unable to get under the chin Souza was cranking her neck. In the final moments of the round she postured and rained in some punches before the final bell.

Round 2:Kankaanpaa came out attempting to strike, but Souza pushed her up against the cage and attempted a take down. Kankaanpaa stuffed it, and obtained dominant position in the clinch against the cage. Souza was able to get a take down and in an attempt to get to the back she found herself on the ground with Kankaanpaa in half guard. Souza found her was back to dominant position, but remains in Kankaanpaa’s closed guard. They made there way back to their feetand Souza clinched Kankaanpaa up against the cage while attempting take downs until the bell.

Round 3: They both came out throwing big hooks, and Kankaanpaa clinched up. Souza jumped guard, and Kankaanpaa was able to land some ground and pound, but nothing to significant. Kankaanpaa passed to half guard and Souza attempted a knee bar. Kankaanpaa found her way back to her feet and they clinched against the cage again. Souza was able to land some strikes and a good knee against the cage. Souza attempted a guillotine, but the arm was in and Kankaanpaa was able to shake her off. Kankaanpaa finishes the round on top landing some more strikes from within Souza’s closed guard.

Round 4: Kankaanpaa landed a right to the body in the opening exchange, and souza returned with her own strikes. Kankaanpaa was winning on the feet, and attempted to get Kankaanpaa to the ground, but Kankaanpaa ends up back on top. While attempting to land some ground and pound Souza was able to secure a triangle and get the tap.

Co-Main Event: Roxanne Modafferi vs. Vanessa Porto

Round 1: Modafferi immediately took the center of the cage and began with a nice combination. Modafferi was successfully utilizing distance, moving in and out, but Porto was able to get some leg kicks in. Porto began to take control of the fight with a series of leg kicks and forward movement, but Modafferi got her up against the cage. Once there, Porto got her to the ground, but Modafferi was very active off of her back. Porto was able to posture momentarily and land some ground and pound, but Modafferi was threatening with a series of submission attempts. The round ended with Porto landing some more ground and pound.

Round 2: Modafferi came out aggressive again, establishing control of the cage. Modafferi was attempting a spinning attack when Porto landed a solid punch dropping her to the ground. Modafferi got back to her feet, but Porto continued to land some solid strikes to Modafferi. Modafferi came forward aggressively, Porto was able to get her to the ground after absorbing Modafferi’s combination. Porto wasn’t doing much inside Modafferi’s guard, and they made there way back to there feet just before the final bell.

Round 3: Yet again, Modafferi came out and took the center of the octagon. She was very aggressive initially, but they settled back into a striking exchange. Porto was having success with leg kicks, but Modafferi was landing more punches. Porto continued to land individual strikes, but Modafferi’s movement allowed her to land more. In the final ten seconds Porto got a brief take down, but Modaferri popped right back up and chased her down with a series of punches.
