Unlike other professional sports, there is no offseason in MMA. Week in and week out, fight cards all over the world are taking place. Some weeks there will be major fight cards filled with big name fighters others not so much, but there are fights taking place every week.

Regardless of whether the fighters are household names or not, The MMA Corner will preview the best fight taking place during the week.

This week’s “Fight of the Week” is the UFC light heavyweight title fight between Anthony Johnson and Daniel Cormier. On Saturday, May 23, 2015, the UFC will head to the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas for UFC 187: Johnson vs. Cormier where the UFC will crown a new light heavyweight champion.

Originally, Jon Jones was slated to defend the light heavyweight title against Johnson, but due to legal troubles surrounding an injury hit-and-run accident, Jones was suspended indefinitely and stripped of his title. With yet another main event in dangerous of being cancelled, the UFC turned to Cormier to step in and battle Johnson for the now vacant title.

While there will be questions about the validity of the title up for grabs on Saturday, there is no question that Johnson and Cormier are two of the best in the world and both men are deserving of this opportunity.

This is an interesting matchup and one that is sure to be entertaining. If Cormier is able to take Johnson down and keep him down the Cormier should cruise to victory. But if Johnson can stop the takedowns and force Cormier to stand, then it could easily be lights out for the former Olympian.
