(Dave Mandel/Sherdog)Invicta FC 13: What to Watch For RJ Gardner July 6, 2015 Events, Spotlight Since its inception, Invicta Fighting Championship has been the home to some of the best women’s MMA in the world. As an organization dedicated solely to WMMA, Invicta’s success is a major reason why the UFC proceed to add a women’s strawweight division in 2014. On Thursday, July 9, 2015, Invicta FC heads to the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Las Vegas for Invicta FC 13: Cyborg vs. Van Duin. Invicta FC 13. Featuring three title fights including the second featherweight title defense for pound-for-pound elite, Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino, Invicta FC 13 is a tremendous event that will surely feature some great action. Atomweight Title Fight In the first title bout of the evening, newly crowned atomweight champion, Herica Tiburcio, looks to defend her title for the first time against Jewels champion Ayaka Hamasaki. A 22-year-old phenom with seven career wins by submission, Tiburcio battled Michelle Waterson for the atomweight title in her Invicta debut. In a tremendous bout that won WMMA “Fight of the Year” for 2014, Tiburcio scored a huge upset by submitting Waterson in the third round. A grappler by trade, Hamasaki is one of the top female fighters in the world today. After winning the Jewels title in only her fourth professional bout, Hamasaki has defended her title three times. For fans of grappling heavy MMA, this will prove to be an excellent bout to watch. Both women bring great grappling chops to the cage and both have the tools to finish when the fight hits the ground. Bantamweight Title Fight The second bout of the evening features a battle for the vacant bantamweight title between Tonya Evinger and Irene Aldana. Since coming to Invicta, Aldana has gone 2-0 with both win coming by first round submission. Evinger on the other hand is riding a six fight win streak with her last three coming under the Invicta banner. Evinger may be a little older and a little less dynamic than Aldana, but she does have a huge advantage in the experience department. Evinger has faced some of the best in women’s MMA history and that experience has shown during this winning streak. Featherweight Title Fight In the main event of the evening, Justino looks to defend her featherweight title for second time as she takes on Faith Van Duin. While Van Duin looked great in her Invicta debut – winning by submission and taking home a “Performance of the Night” bonus – she is in way over her head against Justino. Simply one of the best female fighters of all time, Justino’s game is fierce and aggressive. With seven straight wins by TKO, Justino will be looking to continue that dominance on Thursday night.
